Hanoi
Hanoi (Hà Ni) is the capital of Vietnam and the oldest Southeast Asia. The lively, almost chaotic metropolis offers a variety of attractions and is a very good starting point for exploring the culture of the South East Asian country. It is thus a counterpoint to its southern counterpart, the economically rising Ho Chi Minh City.

arrival
By plane
The Ni Bài International Airport (IATA code: HAN) (Sân bay quc ti Bài) is 35 kilometers north of the city center. The airport is the base of the national airline Viet Nam Airlines which operates domestic destinations. In Europe, Frankfurt am Main, Paris and London are on their flight schedule. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the city. The taxi costs a fixed price of $20,00 and the minibus approximately VND 32,000. The express bus line 86, which stops only eight times to the central station, runs a lane across the taxi rank. An English-speaking creator with a GPS phone ensures that foreigners are placed in the right place, an excellent service for 30,000 (Oct. 2016). The buses, if you go out to the terminal, are the bus station on the left, #7 and #17 also take the city center direction, but in about 2 hours.
by train
Tickets are often much more expensive in city travel agencies than at the train station. Here it only helps to go to the station and buy the tickets. At the train station, you can use the system "pull the number and call". Book as soon as possible.
China
- 1 Gia Lâm Station (north-east of the city center on the other side of the Red River). The trains to Nanning start at this station just outside the city center. Tickets can also be purchased at the Hanoi Central Station. In the 4-seater cabin a ticket VND 568,000 costs.
domestic
- 2 Central Station (Ga Hàng Cỏ), No. 120, Lê Dun. Tel: +84 (0)4-8253949. All domestic train connections arrive here. Tickets for all destinations can be obtained in the two cabins at the station. Every day there are connections according to Huĭ and Nha Trang. The Reunification Express starts five times a day and goes through to Ho Chi Minh City - journey time 30-35 hours. Tickets cost between VND 1.008.000 and 1.547.000. Trains to the northwest serve the town of Lào Cai (9 hours, $20) from where you can reach Sa Pa. You can reach it from the back of the railway station (Trn Quý Cáp). The trains from Hi Phòng only have seats (VND 38.000).
By bus
- The open buses leave Huĭ-Stopps in Đông Hà, Vinh and Ninh Bình for Hanoi.
- From Nanning in China several buses go to Hanoi every day. The journey takes about 7 hours (depending on the arrival at the border) and costs 148 yuan, including lunch and water.
On the street
The main roads from the provinces are quite decent. If you want to arrive individually, you can reach it by car with driver. For example, the journey time is around 2 hours from Ha Long and around 2.5-3 hours from Hui Phòng.
By ship
Hanoi is located in the delta of the Red River, which flows into the Gulf of Tonkin, which is mostly only a small depth of water. However, in the catalogs of cruise companies you will find the tourist destination Hanoi. The ships usually arrive in Halong Bay in the Cai Lan Port, from here it is about 165 km to Hanoi.
mobility
taxi
There are many taxis in Hanoi. All have a taximeter. In the passenger room you will find the relevant price information. Smaller grades are helpful if the drivers (supposedly) cannot publish. Within the city the prices are approximately 20.000 VND, in the suburbs 40.000 VND. Small cars (7,000/km) are slightly cheaper than the vans (10,000/km). The taxi companies Mai Linh and Vinasun are considered to be quite reliable.
Xe ôm (motorcycle taxi)
A common mode of transport is unmistakably mopeds. Many also serve as a taxi and wait at the crossings. It is important to clearly define the objective of refusing to offer extra tours on the way and to negotiate the price before the ascent. Within the city center one should get by with VDN 10,000, to the West Lake with about 15,000.
Cyclo (bicycle
The Cyclo is one of the city's classics, it is a bit wider than in Saigon. In the narrow streets of the Old Town you find them rarely for reasons of space, and there is also a ban. For locals, they have lost their meaning and they serve only tourists. Drivers now have to register. A cyclo ride is certainly a recommendation for every visitor and a nice experience. If you want to take a cyclo tour, you can simply ask at your hotel - or look for a cyclo on the street. In the latter case, only a hard round of negotiations is still awaited. You should go there to 2-3 dollars an hour.
By bus
By metro
At present, Hanoi Dự án Đæ(t đô Hà Ni) is still in test operation and under construction, with partly upper-ground highway and underground subway lanes. On commencement of operations, it will be Vietnam's first rail-bound urban transport. The construction of the first line 2A C from Cat Linh to Ha Dong has been completed after several delays, but pending safety tests of the planned opening in 2020 are still in the works. The second line under construction 3 V will follow in 2022 . Other lines are still in the planning stage.
sights
lakes
There are countless lakes in the city. Many of the city’s attractions are located on or near one of the lakes. It is therefore advisable to take advantage of the city's sightseeing tours.
- 1 Han Hoàn Kiside. The "Lake of Sword" is located in the center of the city and separates the Old Quarter from the colonial part of the city. The name is based on a legend. It dates from the beginning of the 15th century. After her, the poor fisherman Lê Li lives there. A giant golden turtle appeared to him and handed him a magic sword that made him invincible. With his help he beat the occupying forces of the Ming dynasty and finally became king in 1428. After returning to the lake, the turtle called the sword back. This one suddenly climbed to the sky and turned into a dragon that fell into the lake. The king then had the three-story turtle tower (Thap Rùa) built on a small island. There are even turtles in the lake (in honor of the fisherman Rafetus leloii) Hoan Kiem Turtle. They are attributed to the giant Yangtze Turtles (Rafetus swinhoei). A large specimen, 2.10 m long and 250 kg heavy, was actually taken out of the lake in 1968. The age was estimated to be 400 years. It is now exhibited in a glass box in the Jadeberg temple on an island in the lake. The lake was much bigger in the 18th century and had direct access to the Red River when it was originally built. It was partially buried around the 19th and 20th centuries. Today it is about 700 meters long.
- 2 HTây. The West Lake is the largest lake in the city. It is a popular recreational destination for the capitals. Its shores are lined with gardens, temples, pagodas, hotels and restaurants. The lake was originally formed from a curved arm of the Red River. Its length is 17 kilometers. Some legends and stories are also involved in its creation. One of them is the battle between Lc Long Quân (the legend after the Vietnamese ancestors) and a fox spirit (狐 狸 精. ) Therefore, the name Đer used to be called Xác Cáo, which means in something "swamp of fox". The construction and maintenance of the apartment and the Quán Thánh temple are certainly the two most important sights on the lake. To this end, rowing and pedal boats invite you to a pleasant tour. If you are a good walker, you can also walk to the lake from the old town. Alternatives are the cyclo and the taxi. On your way there, you can stop at the Temple of Literature, one of the city's most important sights.
- 3Phan. The small eastern neighbor of the West Lake emerged when its eastern end was separated by a dike in the 17th century to allow fish to be reared. The Thanh-Niên road now passes between the two lakes. During the Vietnam War, the US pilot John McCain (US presidential candidate in 2008) was shot over the lake and landed with the parachute in the lake and was dragged out of the lake by the angry, beating crowd. Today there is a monument that the pilot visited for the first time in 1985. You can rent pedalos on the south-west stretch of the lake. However, it is not the most inviting lake in the city. If you take a walk around the lake, you will soon notice that it is one of the worst polluted waters of Hanoi.
- The small lake is situated on the road Nguyen Du right opposite the temple of literature. He is also known as Halais Lake, a legacy of the French colonial era, when the street still was called Rue Halais. The lake has a small island that can be reached. Phan Thin Quang 4.

It was rebuilt just a year later. A replica was erected in Thủ Đc in Saigon in the late 1950s, early 1960s. There is a small temple next to the pagoda. literary temple
The most famous temple of literature in the country was built in 1070 by King Thánh Tông, the third ruler of the Lý dynasty. It is a Confucian building complex, on which 6 years later the Imperial Academy (Quử Giám) was founded and thus Hanoi's oldest university. Up until 1915, talents, aristocrats and princes were trained here. Until its present state, it has been subjected to some structural changes over time. It was originally inspired by the temple of Confucius in its hometown of Qufu. Subsequently, during the Trn dynasty, the reconstruction took place between 1220 and 1400. Important restorations were needed in 1920, 1954 and 2000. The Doctor’s Steles of Le in the third courtyard were added to the UNESCO World Document Heritage on March 9, 2010.
first courtyard
The temple of literature covers an area of 54,000 m² and is surrounded by a wall. The main axis of the complex extends north-south. In front of the main gate in the south there are five pillars and two panels which invite arriving riders to partake. Three paths lead to the inside of the complex behind the main gate. The middle was reserved for the monarch, the left for the administration, the right for the military. The first courtyard extends to the large central gate (ĐCommuni). It has two minor secondary gates, the Tor of the Acquired Talent ĐCommunt Tài and the gate of the winning Tugend (Thành Đc).
second courtyard
The second area is also more like a quiet garden with trees and lawns, where students can relax. At its end, as a gateway to the third courtyard, is one of the most famous buildings of the temple of literature, the pavilion of the literary constellation (Khuê Văn Các). The building dates back to 1805, with its four white stone columns. A bronze bell hangs from the ceiling, which is rung at certain happiness occasions. This pavilion also has two neighbors to the next courtyard - Suc Văn and Bi Văn, both dedicated to literature.
third courtyard
The center of the third courtyard is a square pond - the source of the heavenly light Thiên quang tỉ nh. On the side of the courtyard you will find the treasure of the temple of literature - the Doctor's Stelen. They have been UNESCO's world document heritage since 2010 - 82 of them still exist, 34 of them have been lost over the years. The stone plates are on stone turtles and contain the name and origin and exam result of the university's doctoral students - a total of 1,307 names. 81 tests were conducted during the Lê and the Communic Dynasty between 1442 and 1779.
fourth courtyard
In the fourth courtyard, which you enter through the controlled goal (Đi Thành Môn), there is a hall on the right and left. The halls house altars and statues in honor of the 72 best students of Confucius and Chu Văn An (1292-1370). He was a Confucian scholar during the Træn Dynastie. On the northern edge of the court lies the large house of the ceremonies (Communicating Bái Đng) and the hall of great success (Đi Thành Đinh Đin). In the middle there is a statue of Konfuzius, accompanied by his four closest students Yan Hui (Nhan Uyên), Zengzi (Tăng Sâm), Zisi (Tử Tam), and Mencius (Ming Tử). There are a lot of carvings, bonsais and bronze cranes standing on turtles. In a small museum you will find writing equipment, paper and some utensils from previous students.
Fifth courtyard
The National University Quử c TGiám finally, is located in the rear, the fifth inner courtyard of the site. Since 1076, the Academy's classrooms have been housed here. The dormitories were also found here - temple guards on the left and officials on the right. In 1236 the buildings were extended. In the following years, there were also extensions and conversions (Quử Vian, (Qu Vietnam), (Qu). After the transfer of the capital to Huim in 1802 an academy was established there as well. In 1946 the site was destroyed and reconstructed in 2000.
At the back of the building, two floors are decorated with statues of important figures in the history of the hotel. Below is a presentation of the rector Chu Văn An, above are three monarchs who have made a special contribution to the Academy:
- Lý Thánh Tông (1023-1072), who built the temple in 1070
- Lý Nhân Tông (1066-1127), who founded the Imperial Academy.
- Lê Thánh Tông (1442-1497), which led to the construction of the stones of the PhD students.
There is a pavilion on the right and left of the rear building. There is a big drum in the east. It measures 2.01x2.65 meters and weighs 700 kilograms. The bell in the western pavilion is 2.1m high with a diameter of 0.99 m.

The subtropical climate is different from the south of the country. During the European winter, which is actually a popular travel time for Southeast Asia, it is also relatively cool in Hanoi. From October to December it is possible to visit the island. At the time, it is still warm with little rain. In the months of January to March there are often cold winds and slowly rising humidity and foggy days. As of April, temperatures will rise rapidly, and monsoon storms will come to light. The peak of this summer season is August. She goes all the way to October. The monsoon season is also accompanied by high water levels and floods in the delta of the Red River. If you are not visiting the capital of Vietnam during the summer, you should have something long with your luggage. It is also recommended to take a wind jacket - especially for excursions to the coastal region and Halong Bay.
